Senior Trade Compliance Specialist

Location: Boston, MA
Job Type: Direct Hire

The Senior Trade Compliance Specialist acts as a lead associate within the Trade Compliance team in supporting all aspects of import regulatory compliance related to the entry of merchandise, including:

Establishing and streamlining processes to ensure compliance to US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) and other government agency, including Food and Drug Administration (FDA), US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS), or other applicable PGA importing requirements, including:

  • Determining the proper tariff classification of imported merchandise, including acting as a lead associate in evaluating complex classifications, submitting CBP Binding Ruling requests, creating work aids, and maintaining the Automated Compliance Tool (ACT) classification decision trees.
  • Determining the proper FDA import entry clearance data and supporting processes to ensure compliance with FDA registration and labeling requirements, as applicable to food, bath & body, and food contact merchandise.
  • Advising, training, and supporting various departments within the company (merchandising, product development, logistics, global buying offices) as well as company agents, vendors, and third parties by:
    • Proactively creating procedures and work aids to ensure proper understanding, implementation, and execution of requirements and processes by all parties.
    • Providing guidance with regard to classification/duty rates, use of the company Automated Compliance Tool (ACT), labeling, documentation, and other importing requirements.
    • Acting as a mentor, leader, and supervisor (as necessary or applicable) to other associates within the department.
    • Providing training, support and guidance.
    • Proactively researching and staying abreast of changes to government regulations, international trade / importing issues, and new trends that apply to imported merchandise and that impact the companyís import processes.


  • Minimum 3-5 years of Import / Customs Compliance experience
  • Licensed Custom Broker, required
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent job experience
  • Advanced classification knowledge, including:
  • Application of the GRIís and sets essential character determinations
  • Researching and interpreting CBP binding rulings, Informed Compliance Publications, and other guidelines for proper classification
  • Prior experience classifying commodities in the merchandise mix, such as apparel, footwear, accessories, food, bath & body, or home furnishings
  • Knowledge of the Customs, FDA, and other PGA entry processes (including familiarity with the new ACE requirements)
  • Experience in researching U.S. government agency regulations and rules via the internet and other applicable sources of information
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and time-management skills; ability to work proactively to ensure smooth operations and effective collaboration
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently in managing projects and daily tasks in a timely manner
  • Excellent oral / written communication skills
