Assistant Manager-Export Customs

Trade Services Department implements and coordinates compliance activities relating to all import and export 1 activity done by or on behalf of AHM. The department is primarily concerned with declaring the proper value, classification and rate of duty as well as other information applicable to imported merchandise and providing this to U.S. Customs and other governmental agencies.

The Assistant Manager is responsible for managing a group of licensed trade compliance specialists to maintain compliance with applicable laws and regulations by actively engaging in planning, organization, direction and control of these functions.


  • Ensure AHM maintains compliance with applicable US export laws and regulations imposed by Commerce' Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) through the Export Administration (EAR) or other US agencies These may relate to the control of certain exports, re-exports, and related activities or apply anti-boycott law provisions prohibiting specified conduct by United States persons
  • Ensure appropriate internal controls are established and maintained as applicable to the goods to be exported by working with AHM logistics divisions
  • Perform audits to assure the integrity and effectiveness of those procedures
  • Ensure programs are in place that provide risk assessment, ensure compliance is effectively maintained, training addresses Identified needs, and any problems identified are corrected as applicable
  • Manage formal audits, coordinate with business units, review regulatory mandates, assist efforts to organize appropriate response, implement solutions
  • Identify necessary corrective measures required to maintain acceptable compliance levels.
  • Maintain, manage and strengthen AHM C-TPAT program; provide assistance to other Honda companies as requested; Tier 3 status benefits are: Expedited Customs clearance of AHM freight; First freight movement in the event of disaster. Tier 3 status is a requirement for Trusted Trader program and affords the greatest benefit to Honda.
  • Identify best application of Drawback opportunities for Honda, considering various types currently authorized (19 U.S.C. 1313) and assess impact of recent statutory changes; monitor CBP for development of applicable regulations and support through industry trade organizations
  • Ensure procedures and internal controls implemented that ensure transactions are compliant with CBP reasonable care standards
  • Staff supervision, administration and development including identifying staff development plans, conducting monthly team meetings, participating and contributing to staff projects; enabling associates to achieve stated goals and contributing to department and division goals
  • Organize and conduct monthly staff meetings; Track associate progress in achieving established objectives and measures; Monitor associate use of the Status Report/PDCA program; Work to develop working group leaders.


  • BA/BS Degree in International Business, Business Administration or related area or equivalent work experience
  • 13+ years of work experience with at least 8 years' experience working for a broker, importer or exporter in a compliance function, preferably with experience in automotive industry, international parts/supply chain business
  • Accounting, financial analysis, accounting and reporting experience very helpful
  • Customs Broker license required
  • In depth working knowledge of US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) import regulations (19 CFR) and associated policies and procedures, as well as programs including C-TPAT, ISF, PMS, Reconciliation, Valuation, HTS, COO, and regulatory audits
  • Expertise in HTS assignments applicable to automotive industry
  • Working knowledge of export regulations (15 CFR), ECCN assignment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience managing, developing and evaluating direct reports
  • Extensive computer skills including proficiency with MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access as well as SAP Business Objects or similar database experience is a must
  • Analytical, detail oriented, good organizational skills necessary
